Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin
cells and most commonly develops on areas of the skin exposed to the sun. However, it can
also occur on parts of the body that are not regularly exposed to sunlight.
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma,
and melanoma. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds is a major
risk factor.
The risk of skin cancer can be reduced by limiting UV exposure, using sun protection, and
avoiding tanning beds. Regular self-examination of the skin and early detection of unusual
changes, such as new or changing moles or lesions, can help identify skin cancer at an early
and more treatable stage.
